Allen Gray Chilton passed away on Monday April 18, 2016 at Westfield Rehabilitation and Health Center in Sanford after a long battle with cancer, and after recently celebrating the 20th anniversary of his heart transplant. He was 82.
Allen was born December 21, 1933 in Pinnacle, North Carolina. He was a proud member of Sanford High School’s Class of 1953 where he served as Junior Class President and was a standout football player. He went on to serve in the US Army and attended The University of South Dakota. He eventually settled in Madison, Wisconsin where he raised his family and began a lifelong career in sales. He won multiple regional and national awards as one of Xerox Corporation’s top sales representatives. Wisconsin Governor Warren Knowles once presented him with an award for outstanding sales achievement. Allen eventually returned to his beloved Sanford, North Carolina where he founded Fountains Mobile Home Park and became a real estate broker. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus from St. Stephens Catholic Church where he relished in the friendships formed with his fellow members of the Wednesday Morning Work Crew. Above all, Allen cherished sharing stories and laughing with friends and family alike. Those fortunate enough to witness his laughter would all agree that it was perhaps his greatest gift and one he happily shared on a daily basis. He was preceded in death by his children William and Joan Chilton, and by his parents Gilbert Chilton and Iris Denny Milliron.
Survivors include his daughters, Kim Chilton of Cross Plains, WI; Mary Chilton of Sarasota, FL; Valerie (Tony) Werner of Bradenton, FL; and son Robert Chilton (Deanna) of Fishers, IN. Grandchildren John Parrell of Mazomanie, WI; Audrey Birnbaum of Atlanta, GA; Holly (Alex) Carney of Sarasota, FL; Mike (Frannie) Parrell of Black Earth, WI; and Halle & Hannah Chilton of Fishers, IN. Special thanks to Duke University Medical Center for the past 20 years and to his lifelong friend Marlene Lloyd for helping care for him in his final days.
