Betty Jean Harrington Spivey passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022, at the age of 92 in Westfield Rehabilitation & Health Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 13, 2022, at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church in sanctuary at 11am. Burial to follow at Buffalo Cemetery.
She was born on November 16, 1929, in Sanford, the daughter of Earl H. and Evelyne F. (Stone) Harrington. Betty graduated from Sanford High School in 1950. Following graduation, she began working for the National Bank of Sanford, which became Southern National Bank, which became BB&T (now Truist). She worked in the banking industry for 52 years. She loved to make her friends, associates and customers laugh. Laughter was her gift. Betty married the love of her life, Robert L. Spivey in 1950. She was a member of East Sanford Baptist Church and later, Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church. Betty loved the Lord and loved working in the nursery of both churches. She joined the Order of the Eastern Star in her later years and enjoyed the friends she made there.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert L. Spivey, sister Juanita Wilkins and husband Russell Wilkins, brother Earl (Sonny) Harrington, Jr., brothers-in-law Marvin (Chick) and wife JoAnne Spivey, Lonnie (Rooney) Spivey, sister-in-law Evelyn and husband Luther (Luke) Clewis.
Surviving in addition to her daughter, Linda Spivey Phelps, and son-in-law Peter, of Asheville are her two grand-cats. She is also survived by sisters-in-law: Doris Spivey and Shirley Harrington and several cousins; nephews: Steve (Karen) Harrington, Mike Harrington, Jimmy (Terrie) Wilkins and Harold (Lucy) Clewis; nieces: Vickie Wilkins, Brenda (Terry) Walker, JoAnn Chambers, Vickie (Mike) Dillard, Susan (Ricky) Keith, Patricia Thomas, Peggy Williams, Dale (Bobby) Cameron, Leslee Spivey and Lucille (John) Rice; dear friends over the years: Margaret Cox, La-Verne Joyner, Kathy Garner, Linda Battle, Cathy Paschal and too many more to name here.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church starting at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Meals on Wheels of Sanford, Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church, or a charity of your choice.
