Carl Manfred Helling

Carl Manfred Helling, 81, of West End, NC formerly of Sanford, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016 at his home in Seven Lakes South.

Manfred was born February 9, 1935 in Bremen, Germany to Carl Helling and Else Schuetze Helling. He first worked with a tobacco import company in Bremen and left Germany to work in Mexico, and returned to Germany to marry Oda Gunhild Tiller on August 31, 1960. After working in Columbia, South America, Manfred and Oda moved to Greenville, TN where Manfred worked with the Austin Company. From there, his family moved to Sanford, NC where he worked for Sanford Tobacco Company and Cigar Supply. For six years he worked for General Cigar Company in NY City while living in Morristown, NJ. Manfred was well-travelled and enjoyed sailing and boating on Jordan Lake with his family, gardening, reading and long walks with his best friend, his dog Rascal.

Manfred is survived by his three children, son Manfred Carl Helling and his wife Yvonne Helling of Raleigh, NC, daughter Sigrid Helling Grandstaff and husband John Grandstaff of Hillsborough, NC, and son Wilfred Tiller Helling of Winston-Salem, NC and two grandsons, Raymond Carl Grandstaff and Nicholas William Grandstaff. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and our dear mother, Oda, parents and his brother, Dr. Wilfried Helling.

Manfred will be buried next to his wife at a later date at Buffalo Cemetery.
