Derrick A.M. Smith, 88 of Sanford passed away Thursday January 2, 2020. A Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 pm at St Francis Anglican Church.
Mr. Smith was born, raised and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of the late Andrew Anthony Smith and Mary Legg Smith. He was preceded in death by a daughter Fiona Smith Hudson, and a sister, Audrey Smith Crockett. After university he migrated to Montreal, Canada, and later his business career took him to Guadalajara and Mexico City, Cali Columbia, Puerto Rico, New York City, Wilton, NH and then to Sanford, NC. Derrick was a member of St Francis Anglican Church, the Sanford Elks Lodge, the Fun Club, a Mason and a Shriner. Mr. Smith was a recipient of the Order of the Longleaf Pine and a former Trustee of the Textile Foundation at N.C. State University. He enjoyed exploring Sanford and surrounding areas for the “next best lunch” as well as hosting family gatherings. He loved the game of golf which he began playing at the age of five. After his retirement, he became an avid watcher of golf and Rugby and solver of Sudoku puzzles. He travelled extensively in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Kathi P. Smith; his children, Bryden Smith (Susan), Carmen Smith Garver (Bob), and Leslie Smith Moshfegh (Behrad); grandchildren, Ashley Wong (Sam), Stephanie Hiser, Kaley Smith, Grayson Smith, Savannah Smith, Bridget Smith, Margaret Garver, Elizabeth Garver, Frances Garver, Lila Moshfegh. And Dylan Moshfegh; great grandchildren, Milo Leone, Simon Wong, Violet Wong, and Theodore Wong; his beloved pet “Hoppy”, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St Francis Anglican Church, 1089 Wilkins Dr, Sanford, NC 27330; the Temple Theatre, P.O. Box 1391, Sanford, NC 27331; or to The Salvation Army of Lee County, 507 N Steele St, Sanford, NC 27330.
