Gary W. Barber, formerly of Sanford, passed away suddenly on April 27, 2020 in Raleigh.
Mr. Barber was born on October 11, 1950 in Buffalo, New York to Betty A. and Warren R. Barber. The family moved to Louisiana, Georgia, and then to Perry, New York. Mr. Barber graduated from Perry Central High School in 1968, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1972. Mr. Barber worked in retail and in outside sales for businesses in the Rochester, New York area before moving to Sanford in the 1990s. He continued working in sales for home improvement and other businesses in the Sanford area. Mr. Barber enjoyed buying and selling antiques and collectibles. He loved watching sports, particularly the Buffalo Bills football team and the New York Yankees baseball team. He also enjoyed family time, including playing card and board games. Mr. Barber was a kind and generous person. He was a mainstay for his mother in her later years when she needed help because of her health, and he faithfully visited his father at an assisted living facility in Sanford with his mother, and after her death. Mr. Barber had been in a nursing home and rehab facility in Raleigh in recent years. Mr. Barber was predeceased by his parents.
Survivors include a sister, Janice A. Barber of Buffalo, New York; a brother, Paul J. Barber (fiancée Donna Bencheikh) of Raleigh; nieces Emma A. Barber of New Ulm, Minnesota and Amelia J. Barber of Raleigh; an uncle, Donald Barber of Fremont, California; and numerous cousins. He was dearly loved and will be missed by his family.
Interment will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church’s Columbarium in Sanford at a later date.
