Karen Matthiesen Towson, 75 of Sanford passed away Sunday July 7, 2019.
A Memorial service will be held at 11am at St. Luke United Methodist Church on July 17, 2019.
Mrs. Towson was born in Windom, MN, daughter of the late Arlo Matthiesen and Mildred Arleen Anderson Matthiesen. Karen graduated from the Green Bay West High School in 1961 and then from Carroll College with a degree in Psychology in 1965. While Karen was a beautiful woman it was her pleasing nature and genuine caring for others which truly set her apart. She never wanted or cared for "center stage" much preferring the background support role for both her family and friends. She was a hospital volunteer for many years and enjoyed serving and visiting with patients. She enjoyed tennis and golf and one year she was the ladies club champion at the Sanford Municipal Golf Club. Although currently residing in Carolina Trace the family has lived in Sanford the past 43 years and recently Karen and her husband celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. If there is one thing to know about Karen, it is that she loved her boys ... Bill, Jeff, Sean, Miller and Banks as well as her lovely daughter-in-law, Julie.
Mrs. Towson is survived by her husband, Bill Towson; sons, Jeffrey Towson of Sanford, and Sean Towson, and wife Julie of Iron Station, NC; two grandsons, Miller Towson and Banks Towson; one brother, Brad Matthiesen and wife Karin of Madison, WI; several nieces and nephews.
Following the service the family will host a reception at 12:30 at Carolina Trace Country Club.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Support of Ovarian Cancer Research, 101 Manning Dr. Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Checks can be made out to UNC Lineberger with Karen Towson’s name on the memo line.
