Lespie Smith

May 20, 1926 — April 30, 2016

Lespie Stewart Smith, 89 of Sanford passed away Saturday April 30, 201 at Wake Forest Baptist Health Center. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00am Wednesday at Jonesboro Baptist Church. Burial will be held at 10am Wednesday Shallow Well cemetery.

 

A longtime resident of Sanford, Lespie was born in Harnett County coming to Sanford after her graduation from Campbell College in 1944. She was the daughter of the late Kennie Patterson Stewart and Nannie McAuley Stewart. She is preceded in death by her husband, Odus G. Smith, and siblings, Hubert, Blanche, Thelma, Bessie, Ross, Elizabeth, Roosevelt, and Cecil. Lespie worked for the Employment Security Commission of NC for 44 years, retiring in 1988. A longtime member of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church, Lespie served in many capacities as Children’s Sunday School Director, Sunday School teacher, and volunteer.

 

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Michael G. Smith of Winston-Salem, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends in the McDowell Center at Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Tuesday, May 3, 2016.

 

Memorials contributions may be made to Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 316 W. Main St., Sanford, NC 28332, or to the charity of one’s choice.
