Lucille Howard York passed away in her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday May 8, 2024 at the age of 94. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday May 25, 2024 First Presbyterian Church. A visitation will follow the service in the Colonnade at First Presbyterian Church.
Lucille was born in Harnett County, on January 6, 1930, a daughter of the late Carey Webster Howard and Inez Campbell Howard; she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold C. York, parents Carey and Inez, brother Carey Campbell “T” Howard, sister Jackie Pearce and brother-in-law Hank Voznick.
Lucille is survived by her daughter Catherine York Moessner (Roland), granddaughters Rachel York Carlyle (Josh) and Cari Moessner Weston (Scott); grandson Damien Francois Moessner; great-grandsons Coast Kelly Carlyle and Carter Scott Weston; sisters Jean H. Voznick, Etta H. Love (Jimmy Sr.), brother Larry Howard (Peggy); many nieces and nephews.
After leaving the family farm where she proudly worked the tobacco fields as she grew up, Lucille began work at Rogers Pickard Funeral Home where she met her beloved husband of 73 years, Harold.
Lucille had a distinguished career with the state of North Carolina, working in the Lee County court system, beginning her career as the book keeper for the clerk of court. She was later elected as the clerk of court, serving from 1985 until she retired in 1999.
Lucille was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, dedicated to the choir where she sang for over 50 years. She served on many committees, taught Sunday School, and led Bible studies. She was named “Elder Emeritus” for exceptional services; she was a faithful servant of the Lord.
Lucille also was a “Proud Yellow Dog Democrat” working tirelessly for the party. After her retirement, Lucille decided to travel the world around, visiting many countries with her sisters, her close friends and her brother-in-law, Hank. She was especially interested in meeting the people, studying and admiring their culture.
