Mildred Crowson Thomas, 90 years old, of Sanford, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, surrounded by friends and family. Mildred was born on September 30, 1926, in Sanford, North Carolina, the daughter of Alice Lee Crowson. She graduated high school in Sanford, North Carolina before working as a clerk at Fort Bragg during World War II. Mildred also worked for many years as a legal assistant for local attorney J. Glenn Edwards and was a long standing member of First Baptist Church. Mildred was active in numerous charities in Lee County, including Meals-on-Wheels. She loved the beach, playing cards, spending time with family, and was an avid fan of Chapel Hill and Carolina basketball. A firm believer in family and in the philosophy that the greatest service a woman can perform is to teach her children the fundamental principles of Christianity and faith.
Mildred had an ardent affection for her late, husband, child, and grandchildren, and was a devoted wife and mother in the truest sense. Mildred was a constant companion to her husband of 44 years, Carlton Bruce Thomas. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was preceded in death by her younger brother, Terry Wayne Crowson.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Donna Leigh Thomas of Sanford, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Thomas Cullen Stafford and wife, Louise Stafford of Raleigh, and Christy Leigh Willis and husband, Jonathan Willis of Raleigh.
A Private Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00am Thursday at Buffalo Cemetery.
