Ramona Ascough Lawson, 95 of Sanford (Cumnock) passed away Thursday January 18, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday at Cumnock Union Church. Burial will follow in the Cumnock Cemetery.
Mrs. Lawson was born in Lee Co, daughter of the late Leonard Ascough and Eva Elizabeth Fackrell. She was preceded in death by cousins, Fred Fackrell, Sue Fackrell Chilton, and Charles Fackrell. Ramona loved to travel, was always reading a book, and adored children. She taught in the public schools for 42 years, most of them in Lee County. She was very involved in her church, playing piano for Sunday services, teaching Sunday school, and planning church pageants and events. She loved North Carolina, especially its wonderful beaches. Ms. Lawson was concerned about the environment, supporting several environmental organizations. She volunteered in several places including the Episcopal Church Soup Kitchen and at Habitat for Birds. She researched and authored a paper about the Cumnock mines as well as writing the history of Cumnock Union Church.
Mrs. Lawson is survived by her son Jeffrey Lawson of Greensboro; daughter, Robin Hardy (Rick) of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Katie Hardy, Trevor Hardy, and Colin Hardy; cousins, Pat Fackrell Beard (Bobby) and John Fackrell (Pauline).
The family will greet friends at 2:00 pm Sunday at the Church prior to the funeral.
